This past weekend I was a volunteer at the LEAF festival as a part of my volunteering. I got to volunteer, eat for free, and see amazing music for free for an entire weekend. Anyway it was my first day on the job and I had to give members of the non-profit all of their gifts as well as coerce them into purchasing another membership (which is expensive ) and tell them about the member party. Some what of a large job for someone who has no idea what they are doing. The member fee pays for the entire sect of the non-profit that allows for international travel for artists as well as children. For the first ten minutes I was there a woman came up to me and attempted to get me to give her a ticket to the member party. She harassed me for about ten minutes until I finally got so fed up with this woman trying to take advantage of me I told her "Ma'am just because I may seem young and unaware of what is going on I am still able to recognize when someone is attempting to take advantage of me. Please, stop." The woman then backed off, apologized, and left. Even though I didn't enjoy being harassed by a woman who could be friends with my grandmother I was still happy that I had the ability to stand up for myself.

I feel so bad you had to go through that. Good job standing up for yourself though! I honestly don't know if I would have been able to. The LEAF festival sounds really cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you seemed to enjoy your experience despite the encounter with this woman. Hopefully you will avoid further encounters if you do plan to continue working with them.
ReplyDeleteSam, you're a lot bolder than I am. If I were in your situation I wouldn't have had nearly the self-confidence it would take to tell that lady to back off. If anything I probably would have just beckoned over a supervisor and would have given the grief to them. <:D
ReplyDeleteGood for you though! It sounds like you're doing a really great thing with your volunteer work. ::)
Though being harassed is not good at all, I think it's great that you stood up for yourself. And it sounds like the LEAF festival was a lot of fun. I'm glad that your service learning hours are very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that you were harassed by that woman :( but at least you were able to do major work involving talking to people about more memberships. I am glad that you had fun and that you are able to contribute to a beautiful cause :)
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous that you got to volunteer at leaf! I hope you had an amazing time (: I think it is really great that you stood up for youself when the woman harrassed you. People can be annoying at times and this makes them hard to handle. You, on the other hand, handled the situation great and it shows how mature you are! Good luck on your future volunteer work!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lot of fun, despite that woman. Great job handling that situation! I don't think I could have handled it as well as you. Go Sam!!
